Education

The California Complete Count Census 2020 (Census Office) recognizes that grade school students and young adults can be powerful communication links to a variety of hard-to-count communities (HTC). Students from kindergarten to through college serve as trusted messengers to family members and will be an important source of information about the Census, especially in immigrant and other limited English-speaking families.

The Census outreach effort to reach students and their families ranges from developing curriculum to supplying bags for food delivery at distribution sites during the COVID-19 crisis. Our office believes in our students and these resources help support students and their families.

The 2020 Census County Offices of Education (COEs) engage more school communities than in other previous year.  We have contracts with 40 COEs to showcase the importance of the Census. To view the COEs and funding amounts, click here.

Why is the 2020 Census important for educators, families and communities?

  • Our children and grandchildren’s future depend on getting an accurate Census count. When children are counted, their schools get their fair share of funding and resources.
  • The 2020 Census data will inform the health and wellness of our families and neighborhoods. By filling out the Census form, your data influences where new hospitals are built and improvements to our health programs.
  • Census data is used by businesses to decide where to invest and create jobs. Filling out the Census ensures that we and our loved ones, neighbors, and communities get a fair shot at these business resources.
  • Census data helps determine how federal dollars are allocated to Title I schools and programs such as migrant education, school nutrition, and English as a Second Language.
  • Participating in the Census fulfills your civic duty and helps our families and communities in California for the next 10 years.
